1540년(중종 35) 식년문과에 급제하고, 형조좌랑
때 정실관계로 오래된 송사를 판서에게 항변하여 종결시켰다. 영의정
심연원의 추전으로 지평이 되고, 선조가 즉위하자 동지사로 명나라에
다녀와서 부제학, 이어서 대사간, 함경도 관찰사, 대사헌, 형조,, 이조,
호조판서를 거쳐 판의금부사, 판돈령부사, 우찬성, 좌찬성에 이르렀다.
