1596년(선조 29) 이몽학의 난이 일어나자 목사
홍가신(洪可臣)의 휘하에 들어가 군사를 이끌고 적을 섬멸했고,
1597년
정유재란(丁酉再亂) 때는 토포사에 이어 충청도 방어사, 전라도 병마절도사 등의
요직을 지내면서 분전했다. 1604년 청난공신 2등이 되고 연창군에
봉해졌다.
