  음보로 합문지후가 되고
  1108년(예종 3) 둘째딸이 예종의 비가 되자 급사중에서 일약 개부 의동삼사수사도 중서시랑 동중서문하평장사가 되고 소성군개구백에 봉해졌다.
  1122년 예종이 죽자 연소한 태자(인종)를 두고 왕위를 탐내던 왕제들을 물리치고 태자를 즉위케 하여 양절익명공신 중서령 영문하상서도성사 판이병부 서경유수사 조선국공이 되었고 인종에게 강요하여 두 딸을 비로 삼게함으로써 권력을 장악했다.
  국사를 한손에 귀고 권세를 부리다가 척준경(拓俊京), 김향(金珦) 등의 거사로 잡혀 영광에 유배되고 이어 배소에서 죽었다.
